Move from survival responses to genuine connection
Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy:
Processing your past to heal your present
You've done the work of understanding yourself intellectually, but the same reactions keep showing up. You replay those same conversations in your mind, wondering if you said too much or not enough. You shut down during a tense conversation, then feel frustrated you couldn't speak up in the moment. You've reflected and grown, yet familiar patterns still pull you in when relationships get intense. Living between different cultural expectations can add another layer, where you adapt yourself depending on context without always realizing it.
EMDR therapy helps reduce the emotional charge behind these automatic responses. Using bilateral movement, it works directly with your nervous system to reprocess stuck memories at the level where they're stored. This is bottom-up work that complements talk therapy by processing emotions in both the mind and body. When old experiences lose their intensity, you gain more choice in how you respond. This kind of healing then opens space for deeper connection with those in your life.
You’re in the right place if…
⟡ You’ve spent plenty of time talking about your past and intellectually understanding your triggers, but your body still reacts with the same old racing heart, muscle tension, or heavy wave of exhaustion.
⟡ You feel caught between wanting to live fully in the present and feeling stuck in past distress, leaving you unsure how to calm your body when old triggers flare up.
⟡ You want to respond to daily stressors with a sense of calm, but find your body reacting in survival mode. You get flooded by panic, anger, or shut down before your mind can catch up.
⟡ You struggle to feel safe or grounded in your own skin, especially when a current situation mirrors an old wound or violates an unwritten rule you grew up with.
⟡ You’re starting to see how past experiences and family blueprints still dictate your daily choices, and you want a physical and mental release from that invisible weight.
Meet Your Oakland, CA EMDR Trauma and Relationship Therapist
I’m Ariel, an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist who helps individuals heal from trauma, chronic stress, and past wounds using EMDR. I have completed Part 1 of the EMDR Basic Training and am currently practicing under consultation. Whether you are carrying the heavy weight of a particular traumatic experience, or feeling like a more somatic approach to your relationship and attachment challenges might help, this is a type of therapy that can truly shift things.
I have experience working with people who understand their past intellectually but still feel the physical and emotional weight of old memories. I also have experience working with second-generation clients who carry an inexplicable, perpetual feeling that they are doing something wrong even if they can name that they’re not. Many of the men I’ve worked with pull themselves inward, shutting down until they eventually explode. EMDR therapy can be helpful for clients with a wide range of experiences such as this, because of the shared human experience of carrying memories, trauma, and emotional distress physically.
My perspective as a therapist is shaped by an understanding that trauma and emotional distress are stored in both the mind and body. Thus, even our physical experience living in our bodies are shaped by the cultural scripts and family maps we grew up with. EMDR therapy works by working directly with what’s underneath our words, helping you live with more clarity and a greater sense of agency. Click below to learn more about me and how I work.

EMDR Therapy Can Help
What the Process Looks Like…
-
We begin by mapping out your triggers and distressful thoughts and emotions, while immediately building resources to keep you grounded. Before diving into heavy memories, I will teach you concrete somatic techniques to calm your nervous system and manage physical distress. This step ensures you feel entirely safe, supported, and in control of your body before we begin the deeper processing work.
-
Next, we target the specific childhood wounds and past traumas that are driving your current emotional distress. While you briefly focus on a painful memory and its negative self-belief, we will use bilateral movement (like guided eye movements or hand-tapping) to help your brain reprocess the event. This naturally lowers the distress attached to the memory, allowing your body to finally release the stored survival response.
-
We’ll lock in a new, adaptive belief about yourself, shifting from old narratives to new ones. We do full body scans to ensure no lingering tension remains tied to those old memories, ensuring your physical responses match your new mental clarity.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
While EMDR therapy is incredibly helpful for those who have had a significant traumatic experience, it can be helpful in many other contexts as well. EMDR therapy helps with all kinds of experiences that have left an impact on you. That includes major trauma like accidents, violence, or physical abuse. It also includes relational wounds, difficult family dynamics, or moments that felt overwhelming even if they seem small to others. If something from your past still carries emotional charge and affects how you show up today, EMDR therapy can help process it.
-
A lot of what gets in the way of connection comes from old experiences that taught your nervous system to protect itself in a way that no longer works well for you. Maybe you shut down during conflict, people please to keep peace, or impulsively react without thinking. EMDR therapy helps reduce the emotional intensity behind these reactions. When old experiences are processed, you have more choice in how you respond. This creates space for clearer communication and deeper connection with the people in your life.

EMDR therapy follows a clear structure. We start by understanding your history and identifying what you want to work on. Before any processing begins, we spend time building resources and grounding tools so you feel stable and resourced.
When we move into processing, you'll bring to mind a target memory along with an image, a negative belief about yourself, and where you feel it in your body. Then I guide you through sets of bilateral movement, which can look like gentle eye movement or tapping. Between sets, I'll ask you what you notice. Your brain makes connections on its own without me directing the content.
Once the memory loses its charge, we install a positive belief and do a body scan to check for any remaining tension. Wherever we are in the process at the end of the session, we end with closure so you feel grounded before leaving. The next session starts with a check-in to see how things settled.

Talk therapy can sometimes lean into a top-down approach, using insight and thinking about our emotions, alongside feeling them, to create change. EMDR therapy works bottom-up, engaging your nervous system directly through bilateral movement and involving relatively little talking. This matters because some things don't shift through a change in understanding alone. For instance, you might know why you react a certain way but still feel powerless to change it. EMDR helps process the experience at the level where it's stored in your nervous, so the shift happens in your body, not just your mind.
-
It truly depends on what you're working on. Some single-incident memories can be processed in a few sessions. Relational or developmental trauma can take longer because there's more layers to work through. We'll talk about your goals and pace things accordingly. Some people do EMDR as a focused block of work, and others integrate it into longer-term therapy. I prioritize going at a pace that feels sustainable for you.
-
Yes. I work with clients who have an ongoing therapist and want to add EMDR therapy as an adjunct. This can be a great way to access trauma processing while maintaining your existing therapeutic relationship. With your permission, I can coordinate care with your therapist to make sure we're aligned. I offer sliding scale rates to make this more accessible. If this sounds like a fit, please reach out and we can talk about how it might work.
